20 SAP interview questions every consultant should prepare for in 2026

You're 48 hours from an interview for a role that would change your career. You know your stuff. But can you articulate it under pressure?

Here are 20 questions that come up in SAP consultant interviews. Not generic questions from the internet. Real questions from real interviews, with the kind of answers that land offers.

Technical questions (8)

1. Walk me through your most complex data migration.

The interviewer wants specifics. Not methodology slides. They want to hear about the 3am cutover night when the GL balances didn't reconcile and what you did about it. Name the client. Name the system. Give numbers.

2. How do you handle S/4HANA code remediation?

They want to know your process. Custom code analysis tool (ATC reports), prioritization matrix, what you deprecate vs rewrite vs leave. Give a real example with numbers: "1,200 custom objects, remediated 847, deprecated 290, deferred 63 to Phase 2."

3. Explain your approach to blueprint workshops.

Not "I facilitate workshops." How do you prepare? How do you handle the business user who insists their process is unique? How do you document decisions? What tools do you use?

4. How do you design a chart of accounts for a multi-entity consolidation?

This separates senior consultants from juniors. Talk about operating vs reporting COA, intercompany reconciliation, segment reporting requirements, and how you balanced standardization with local needs.

5. What is your experience with integration architecture?

API-based integrations, middleware (SAP PI/PO, CPI), IDOCs, RFC, OData services. Which ones for which use cases? Give an example of a complex integration you designed.

6. How do you approach performance tuning?

Don't just say "indexing and SQL optimization." Talk about your diagnostic process. Runtime analysis, SQL trace, code inspector. Give an example where you reduced a report's runtime from 45 minutes to 30 seconds.

7. What's your experience with Fiori/UI5?

Tile configuration, Fiori launchpad, custom app development vs extending standard apps. Have you worked with SAP Build? What about role-based UX design?

8. How do you handle cutover planning?

Sequence, dependencies, rollback criteria, communication plan, dress rehearsals. Give a real example with the number of cutover tasks and how you managed them.

Team and project management questions (7)

9. How do you manage stakeholder expectations when things go wrong?

10. Describe a situation where you had to push back on a client request.

11. How do you onboard team members mid-project?

12. How do you handle scope creep without damaging the client relationship?

13. Describe your approach to knowledge transfer at the end of a project.

14. How do you manage offshore and onshore teams across time zones?

15. Tell me about a project that failed and what you learned.

For each of these, use the STAR format but make it real. Situation (name the client, the project, the year). Task (what you were responsible for). Action (what you specifically did, not what the team did). Result (with numbers).

Commercial and HR questions (5)

16. What are your rate expectations?

Never give a number first. Ask about their budget range. Then position your rate relative to the value you deliver. "Based on similar engagements where I delivered $X in value, my rate is competitive with senior consultants in this market."

17. Why are you leaving your current project?

Contract ending, looking for a new challenge, want to work with a specific technology. Never badmouth your current client.

18. Where do you see yourself in 3 years?

They want to know if you'll commit to their project or leave in 6 months. Show that you're thinking about depth, not just job hopping.

19. What makes you different from the other 10 consultants we're interviewing?

This is where your project portfolio saves you. Reference specific projects, specific outcomes, specific industries.

20. Do you have questions for us?

Always have 3. Ask about the project timeline, the team structure, and what success looks like for this role. Never ask about benefits or vacation in the first interview.

The preparation difference

Most consultants wing their interviews. They know their stuff but can't articulate it under pressure. The ones who prepare with structured answers from their real projects land the offer.
